How to Choose a Beehive

Understanding Your Options

Choosing the right beehive is one of the most important decisions a beekeeper makes. The type of hive you select will influence every aspect of your beekeeping practice — from colony management and inspections to honey extraction and winter preparation.

In the UK, the most common hive types are the British National, the WBC, and the Langstroth. However, the Wielkopolski hive — widely used across Central Europe — offers significant advantages for beekeepers who want higher honey yields, easier colony management, and superior timber construction.

The Wielkopolski Hive: Why It Stands Apart

The Wielkopolski system uses deep brood boxes with standardised frames designed to accommodate a larger brood nest. This reduces swarming, allows colonies to build up stronger winter populations, and — crucially — delivers higher honey yields per hive compared to shallower national-standard systems.

Key advantages of the Wielkopolski:

  • Deeper brood frames support natural bee biology and larger colony populations
  • Reduced tendency to swarm compared to shallower systems
  • Standardised frame dimensions compatible with professional apiary equipment
  • Premium Weymouth Pine construction for excellent insulation through British winters
  • Widely used in commercial apiculture across Poland and Central Europe

How Many Hives Should You Start With?

We recommend starting with at least two hives. Having a pair allows you to compare colony behaviour, share resources between hives if needed, and provides a useful backup if one colony runs into difficulties. Most experienced beekeepers manage between five and twenty hives; commercial operations may run hundreds.

Key Factors to Consider

When selecting your first hive, consider the following: your available space and location, your long-term goals (hobby beekeeping, honey production, or queen rearing), your budget for initial equipment, and the local beekeeping community — who can provide advice and support specific to your area.
